Seeking Knowledge

Allah said in his book : “Allah will raise in rank those of you who believe as well as those who are given knowledge.” (58:12) Ibn-`Abbas radiallahu anhu said 'the learned men rank seven hundred grades above the believers; between each two of which is a distance five hundred years'. In a famous narration of the prophet he (ﷺ) said “Scholars are the heirs of the prophets.” Imam Ahmed narrates that Rasul Allah (ﷺ) said regarding something: “That would happen when knowledge is lost.” One of the Sahabah asked, “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) , how could knowledge be lost when we have studied the Quran, we are teaching it to our children and our children will teach it to theirs.” Rasul Allah (ﷺ) said: “Woe to you! I thought you were one of the most learned men of Medinah. Can’t you see the Jews and Christians are not benefiting even though they have their scriptures (Torah and Injeel) right with them?” It's not enough just to have books, or access to the internet, or an application on your phone. But we need to be in the company of the learned, and to learn from them. These are the inheritors of the prophets and messengers. The legacy of prophets is not material wealth; it is ‘ilm (knowledge, wisdom, understanding, tolerance, forbearance which come with ilm) and so, the scholars have achieved the best legacy. One Hadith says, “When Allah intends to bless a person, He gives him the understanding of Deen” This means that those scholars who have been blessed with the correct understanding of Deen, are the ones with whom Allah has intended good. And that Allah wants the best for them in this world as well as the hereafter. Another Hadith indicates that when a person dies, his knowledge left behind, benefitting people, continues to benefit him in the grave. Subhanallah! A scholar’s ranks continue to rise even after his death. One Hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali radiallahu anhu that Rasulullah (ﷺ) said to him, “Be a scholar or a student or one who loves them” Therefore, if you are not a scholar, then become a student and start studying your Deen. If you can’t study for some reason,(eg your time’s up, too old, can’t remember things), then at least love the scholars. Because a Hadith states, “A person on the Day Judgment will be with those whom he loved.” “Umar radiallahu anhu said, “The death of a thousand worshippers who spend their days in fasting and their nights in continual prayer is a lesser calamity than the passing away of one learned man who is aware of what is lawful before Allah and what is unlawful." Al-Shafi’i said, “Seeking knowledge is better than supererogatory works.” Daar Ibn Umar will be starting lessons on Saturday Mornings from January 29th. This class is designed to cover the necessary aspects of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) which relates to the day to day life of the contemporary Australian Muslim. From Worship to Marriage, Divorce and Death and Inheritance. Also we will be doing an in depth study of Imam Nawawi's well known "40 Ahadith". Together with an introduction to the principles of the Islamic Faith, and how they are derived from the Qur'an and Sunnah. Classes are open to Brothers and Sisters alike. With proper arrangements for men and women. Timing for these classes will be from 7am Saturday mornings, until 9am. Terms will be 10 weeks long and follow the normal NSW school year calendar. Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Whoever goes out seeking knowledge is in the way of Allah until he returns. Abu-al-Darda’ radiallahu anhu also said, “Whoever should regard that rising early for study is not jihad [reveals himself] deficient in reasoning and intellect.” Applications can be found here: https://form.jotform.com/220081632552851

Blessings of Hifz: A Mother's Story

I am sharing this to show that memorizing the Quran is a means of great blessings and goodness for everyone, male or female, mother or not. Not everyone needs to use this blessing in the same way. There are different ways huffaz can benefit their community. For me, to read the Qur'an to my daughters is much more fulfilling and beneficial in the long run than leading thousands of people in prayer or being on stage and reading for an audience. It is heartening to see more and more girls memorizing the entire Qur'an. We have come a long way from the time that families would train their sons to be huffaz while leaving their daughters struggling with basic Qur'an reading, let alone memorization. For any parents who might be wondering whether they should encourage their daughters to memorize the Qur’an, I guarantee you that this is the most valuable gift you can give any child. For any girl who might have been having doubts about whether doing hifz is really worth it, I assure you it absolutely is. And the older you grow and the more entangled you get in life's challenges, whatever you may be facing, hifz is the anchor that will keep bringing you back to the Qur'an and ensure that the Qur'an remain your lifelong companion. Full-Time Qur'an Memorisation Applications 2022

“Verily we have revealed the Remembrance (Qur’an) and indeed we are its protectors.” (Al-Qur’an) All praise is due to Allah Ta’ala alone for the priceless bounty of the Qur’an-al-Kareem. May our lives be sacrificed for the Glorious Qur’an. Hence those who have been especially chosen by Allah Ta’ala as a means to protect and safeguard His pure Book are extremely fortunate indeed. These special people are the Huffaz (plural of Hafiz). They are a manifestation of Allah Ta’ala’s Majesty and Power, that Allah Ta’ala showered His mercy upon them and enabled them to commit the Glorious Qur’an to memory. Memorising a book as voluminous as the Qur’an-al-Kareem is indeed a miracle — a miracle of the Qur’an which Allah Ta’ala has made manifest through His special servants. In the present times we are extremely fortunate that we have many Huffaz in our communities, unlike the situation a few decades ago when Huffaz had to be brought from far away places to perform the Taraweeh Salaah. PRICELESS TREASURE All praise be to Allah Ta’ala! Salutations be upon our most beloved Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). Indeed, how greatly Allah Ta’ala has blessed you. What a priceless treasure you have been granted. The entire world, together with all its wealth and riches, cannot match even one verse of the Qur’an you have in your heart, let alone the entire Qur’an. You have become a special person of Allah Ta’ala (a VIP in the true sense of the word) and a member of His “family.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is reported to have said: “Verily Allah Ta’ala has family members among the people.” “Who are is Family?” asked the Sahaaba (Radhiallahu Anhum). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The people of the Qur’an. They are the family of Allah and His special people!” (Targheeb). Thus the Hafiz, have become a special person in the sight of Allah Ta’ala. BEST Furthermore, you are also among the BEST of people. This title comes to you from none other than our most beloved Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), as he declared in the following hadith: “The best among you is he who learns the Qur’an and teaches it” (Tirmizi). INSIGNIFICANT WEALTH Wallah! … Wallah! The wealth in your bosom is more valuable than the sun, moon, the oceans and the entire universe. Those who own gold and diamond mines or oil wells have NOTHING, indeed nothing, compared to what you have in your heart. When all the gold and diamond mines and all the oil wells of the world cannot compare to what you have, it is obvious that the one little flashy car, or the tiny little “mansion”, or the few million dollars are totally insignificant when compared to the wealth of the Qur’an-al-Kareem that is in your heart. What a wealth! Subhanallah! What a gift! Allahu Akbar! All praise be to Allah Ta’ala in the Heavens and on the earth. PARENT’S HONOUR Yes, the Hafiz undoubtedly has the greatest treasure in his heart. The reality of this treasure will truly become apparent in the Hereafter when, on the day of judgement, the PARENTS of the Hafiz will be made to wear such crowns that will outshine the sun while the Hafiz himself will be permitted to intercede on behalf of ten sinful Believers who were destined for Jahannum. Both these astounding virtues are mentioned in the following Ahadith: “He who learns the Qur’an and practices upon it, his parents will be made to wear a crown on the day of Qiyamah, the brilliance of which will excel that of the sun if the same were within your worldly houses. Hence, what do you think about the person who himself acts upon it?” (Abu Dawood). Whoever reads the Qur’an and memorises it, while he regards what it makes lawful as lawful and its unlawful as forbidden (i.e. he practices according to it), Allah Ta’ala will admit him into Jannah and will accept his intercession on behalf of ten such persons of his family who were doomed to the fire of Jahannum (Tirmizi). While the great virtues are evident from these Ahadith, nevertheless both virtues are subject to a precondition which is absolutely clear – the condition of practicing according to the Qur’an-al-Kareem. Thus, these rewards are not for merely memorising the Qur’an. Rather, they are promised to the one who memorises the Qur’an and also acts according to the injunctions therein. SELECTED Remember, the memorising of the Qur’an is only possible with the help and assistance of Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala selects who He wishes for the protection of His Pure Word (the Qur’an-al-Kareem). Many cherished the desire to become a Hafiz, but they passed on to their graves with that desire not fulfilled. Allah Ta’ala has specially selected YOU to receive this special favour and this great status. Hence it must be appreciated and its rights must be fulfilled. KNOWLEDGE OF PROPHETHOOD Considering the superior status of a Hafiz, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has given special instructions to him to adopt a superior conduct. Hazrath Abdullah bin Amr (Radhillahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: Whoever reads the Qur’an secures the knowledge of Prophethood between his ribs (in his bosom), though divine revelation is not sent upon him. It does not befit the one endowed with the Qur’an that he be indignant (upset) with those that are in anger, nor should he indulge in any act of ignorance with those who are ignorant, while the Qur’an is there in his bosom” (Haakim). TRUE HAFIZ Therefore when the Hafiz has gathered the knowledge of Prophethood in his heart, his conduct should be the conduct of the Ambiya (Alaihimus Salaam). The true Hafiz will therefore shun all evil habits, he will never attend places of evil and sin and the company he keeps will be of those who are pious. His character with his parents, Ustaads, family members, the elders, the young and with every person will be such that the life of a true Muslim and of a bearer of the Qur’an will shine forth. He will be clothed with piety and will be adorned with humility. His conduct will automatically reflect that he is a different person, not just another fellow who cannot be distinguished from others on the street. The Hafiz will thus respect himself – not just his physical self – but the Qur’an-al-Kareem that is in his heart. As a result he will be bestowed with great honour in this world as well as in the Hereafter. In this regard, it is of vital importance for every parent to adhere to certain guidelines that will ensure the Deeni and physical safety of their children during this period. It takes just a few moments of carelessness to cause a lifetime of regret and remorse, so we should all be vigilant and should not take our children’s wellbeing for granted. With this in mind, we will be continuing some of our regular programs during the holidays. In Shaa Allah, we will do our best to broadcast all programs over our Mixlr channel. http://mixlr.com/daar-ibn-umar

Summer Safety

With the onset of the summer season, and the annual school holidays on our doorstep, children across the country are overjoyed and are eagerly awaiting the hours of fun they will enjoy in the sun. With this in mind, a few basic guidelines have been outlined below: Deeni Safety Guidelines: 1. Ensure that your children perform all their salaah on time. If they are big boys, then ensure that they perform their salaah in the masjid with jamaat. 2. Though the children are on holiday, make them set aside some time daily for recitation of the Quraan Majeed, zikr, etc. 3. If they have access to any devices, ensure that there is complete supervision. Do not allow them to engage in haraam (communicating with the opposite gender, listening to music, watching haraam movies or clips on YouTube, TikTok, etc.). 4. Monitor and scrutinize their circle of friends, and ensure that they keep good company with good children that will be a positive influence in their lives. 5. In order to strengthen their imaan in the midst of the fitnahs that erupt in the holidays, take them for some Deeni programme. Girls can be taken for the weekly ta’leem, while boys can be taken for any programme or bayaan in the masjid. 6. Though the children are on holiday, ensure that their dressing is still appropriate. Just because it is the holidays, it does not mean that their dressing should become bereft of hayaa, or resemble the fashion of the disbelievers, etc. 7. Ensure that boys and girls who are growing and discerning do not mix and play with one another. Rather, the males and females should remain separate. Physical Safety Guidelines: 8. Know the whereabouts of your children at all times (e.g. if they visit a friend’s house to play), and try to keep them under adult supervision. If constant supervision is not possible, at least get someone to check on them from time to time. 9. If your children go to another person’s home, or someone else’s children come to your home, make it a habit to phone and inform of the children’s arrival. This will assist in keeping them safe and will also keep the parent’s mind at ease. 10 Discourage children from playing on the street. Let them play in the yard instead. In this way, they will not be run over by a car, mugged by thieves, etc. 11. Do not allow the children to play with dangerous items e.g. lighters, matches, knives, etc. 12. If they will be in the sun for a prolonged period, apply sunblock to their skin so that they are protected from sunburn. 13. Children swimming must be supervised by an adult at all times. 14. Keep floatation devices in and around the pool (pool noodles, etc). If a child falls into the pool by accident, or begins to flounder in the water, he will be able to grab onto the device and save himself from drowning. 15. Keep a net on the pool when not in use. If there is a fence around the pool, keep it locked. After using the pool, ensure that the net is placed over the pool again. 16. Teach and educate your children regarding the dangers of drowning. Explain to them that even an experienced swimmer can suffer a sudden cramp that can cause him to drown. Hence, they should be careful at all times and should immediately exit the water if they feel unwell. 17. Keep antihistamine medication or other allergy medication on hand, in case your child or any other child is stung by a bee etc. and suffers an allergic reaction. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL – together with taking all precautions, always make du‘aa to Allah Ta‘ala to keep your children safe – in body and in soul. *original article: http://uswatulmuslimah.co.za/family-matters/home/3191-summer-safety.html
