Taraweeh 2023

Ramadhan undoubtedly is a very great gift that Allah has presented to His Ummah. If we decide to count the favours that Allah has placed in this blessed month, the ones that are manifest and the ones that are concealed, we would never be able to do so. One of the greatest favours that Allah has presented to us in this month is that we get the opportunity to listen to the Word of Allah that is the Holy Qur’an with its proper Tajweed.

Definition of Taraweeh
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (R.A.) (died 852 a.h.) says in Fathul Baari – commentary of Bukhari:

“Taraweeh is the plural of tarwehah which means one occasion of rest similar to the word ’tasleemah’ from ’salaamah.’ Salaah in Jama’ah (congregation) in the nights of Ramadhaan is called taraweeh, because initially when they gathered upon it they needed to rest between every 2 sets of slaam (i.e. between every 4 rakaats) [Fathul Baari vol.4 pg.294].

Proof of Taraweeh being Sunnat:
It is reported by Abdur Rahman Ibn Auf (R.A.) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Verily Allah Ta’ala made the fasting of Ramadhaan compulsory upon you and I Have made its standing (in Salaah) Sunnat for you. Hence whoever fasts the month of Ramadhaan and stands (in prayer) in Ramadhaan with faith and hoping for reward will emerge from his sins like the day his mother gave birth to him (Nasai pg.468 vol.4, Musnad Ahmad Hadith no.1660 vol.2 pg.306).

Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)’s words: “And I have made it (standing in prayer) sunnat for you” indicates to the fact that standing in prayer in Ramadhaan is Sunnat and what is intended by Qiyaame Ramadhaan or standing in prayer in Ramadhaan is Taraweeh according to Ijmaa (consencus of opinion) as Allamah Kirmaani (R.A.) has mentioned. With this it is established that the origin of standing in Ramadhaan is the Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) not the Sunnah of Umar (R.A.) as some claim (Ia’laus Sunan vol.7 pg.76,77).

During the month of Ramadhan, Taraweeh Salah is offered at night in the Muslim world. In many countries they are offered by the Huffaz of the Qur’an Shareef, who recite the entire Qur’an or even more, during the month of Ramadhan.

Masha Allah, these Huffaz commit the entire Qur’an that comprises 114 Surah or 6236 Ayahs to their memories. The ‘Word of Allah’ is a miracle and that is why Allah has made it possible that human beings are able to commit it to memory.

However, placing appropriately the Qur’an in the memory is a process that requires a lot of concentration, plenty of hard work, innumerous sacrifices like forfeiting sleep, various recreation activities, social gatherings and outings, attachment to the mobiles phones, reading books – the list is endless.

There are chances these huffaz might sometimes make mistakes while reciting the Qur’an. Unfortunately, there are people who are quick to criticise these huffaz when they make a few slips here and there.

You are criticising a person who has memorised the Kalaam of Allah, the Timeless Speech of Malikul Mulk. Just imagine, when this Qur’an is printed on a lifeless object like a book which is made of ordinary paper, its status is raised so much that we are instructed to make Wudhu (ablution) before we can touch it. Then what about the status of a human being in whose heart is embedded the entire text of the Qur’an? Would not his worth be elevated? Obviously, his status would become so high that we can never offer him the respect and honour that he fully deserves.

There are many virtues that a Haafiz can gain by memorising the Holy Qur’an. One of the most amazing virtue he secures is given in the following hadeeth: “A bearer of the Qur’an, if he regards what is permissible as halaal and what is forbidden as haraam, will intercede for ten of his family members on the Day of Resurrection, all of whom deserved to enter Hell.”

Another of great virtues is evident in this Hadeeth:

“Mu’aadh al-Juhani narrates that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wasallam) said: ‘Whosoever recites the Quran and practices upon its injunctions, the reciter’s parents will be given a crown on the day of Qiyaamat. The brightness of that crown will be more intense than the brightness of the sun in your actual house.”

We are actually supposed to offer maximum respect and honour to these Huffaz. Instead of doing that, many of us are making them the targets of our criticisms.

Criticising such a person whose status is elevated so high is obviously a grave mistake. It also tantamounts to committing the sin of backbiting.

Al Humdu Lillah....
This year Huffaz from Daar Ibn Umar will be leading Taraweeh Prayers and Qiyaamul Layl in more than 4 different locations. How many Rakaat of Salaah? How many Sajdah? How many Tasbeeh? And how much Qur'an? May Allah accept all their A'maal and sacrifices. And May Allah accept from all those who supported us, and helped us to get to this point.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever guides someone to goodness will have a reward like one who did it.”
